History of Valentine’s Day
There are a number of Saints called Valentine
who are honored on February 14. The day became coupled with idealistic love in
the middle age in England.
It has followed on from the Pagan fertility festivals that were held all over Europe as the winter came to an end. Conventionally,
lovers exchanged hand written notes. Saleable cards became accessible in the
mid nineteenth century.
The Catholic Church recognizes at least three
different saints named Valentine or Valentines, all of whom were martyred. One
legend contends that Valentine was a celebrant who served during the third
century in Rome.
When monarch Claudius II decided that single men made better armed forces than
those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine,
realizing the unfairness of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to carry
out marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were exposed,
Claudius well thought-out that he be put to death.

The
Legend of St. Valentine
The history of Valentine’s Day and the history
of its patron saint–is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long
been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine’s Day, as we know
it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But
who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient
rite?
